History World Rankings Philosophy
HistoryWorldRankings.com is a social site for ranking your favorite items, viewing other users' rankings and the composite World Ranking, and having fun meeting other world history fans.
Categories are defined such as Favorite Military Leaders of All-Time. Users then rank their favorites, which automatically creates a personalized web page featuring their ranking (Example: 's Favorite Military Leaders of All-Time).
For each category, HistoryWorldRankings.com maintains a constantly-updated World Ranking. For example, the "World's Favorite Military Leaders of All-Time" are determined based on a weighted composite of user rankings (Points System Explained), and then displayed in a stylized web application that provides users with the definitive World Ranking, as well as a forum, links directory, movie performance records, demographic-based trending graphs, and more.
Demographic Graphs and Stats supplement every World Ranking. 18 different demographic types provide a closer look into the user rankings which compose the world ranking, and reveal compelling and amusing differences. Of course, users may decline to provide their demographic data, and it is not required to have one's ranking count towards the World Ranking. Providing demographic data only makes the user's rankings count in the respective demographic statistics, and it may be optionally be displayed on the user's profile page.
Beyond the exposure and distinction of a high World Ranking, items may qualify for a number of other honors. For example, each World Ranking also maintains and links to records that are based on current or historical data. These records go beyond the Points System which determines the World Ranking, and allow another look at the favorite items in a given category. Records based on current data include Most Times Ranked No. 1, Most Times Ranked, Highest Average Rank, Biggest Average Rank Gain, Biggest Average Rank Fall, Most Comments, Most Links, and Most Forum Posts. At the end of each week (Saturday at midnight), the week's World Rankings are finalized and archived, allowing for records such as Most #1 Weekly Finishes and Most Top 5 Weekly Finishes.
Similarly, global item records for the entire HistoryWorldRankings.com web site are maintained. These are the best of the best, across all categories.
When a new item is ranked in a category, an item-specific web page is created that provides features such as ranking statistical data, a links directory, a forum, and all comments posted for that item. Any posts made in the item's forum are also accessible in the category's World Ranking forum, and any links posted on the item's links page are also available on the World Ranking's links page. After a new item is ranked, future users who rank their favorites in that category will be able to easily select the item from a drop-down list. This allows HistoryWorldRankings to grow rapidly, and maintains consistency in the data.
When a user signs up for an account, he or she acquires a User Profile web page located at www.historyworldrankings.com/username (Example). This page will be automatically populated with any Rankings that the user creates. If the user creates any new categories, the user becomes the owner of these categories and has administrative control. These Categories Owned will also be displayed on the user's web page.
User statistics such as Rankings Created, Categories Owned, Items Ranked, Forum Posts, and Links Added contribute to the user's Total Points. Additional points are given when items are ranked with pics, when items are ranked with comments, and when new forum threads are started (as opposed to replies to existing threads). Bonus points are accumulated for Categories Owned when other users create rankings and rank items in those categories. A Points Breakdown for any user is always accessible by clicking the user's Total Points figure on his or her web page.
HistoryWorldRankings.com maintains a Global Ranking of all users based on Total Points. This ranking is linked directly from the top of every page on the web site, via the Browse by User link. Users are recognized for their contributions to the community, and their user pages become highly trafficated. Furthermore, the World Ranking Points System (as previously mentioned) weighs a user's rankings based on the user's Total Points. Users who contribute the most to others' enjoyment of the site will have a higher point total, and therefore their opinion is held in a higher esteem in the World Rankings. These users have more points due to a greater number of contributions and/or more thoughtful contributions (such as more pics and comments when ranking items).
A user's Profile page stylistically displays all of the user's interests and opinions via Rankings, and also displays any degree of personal data that the user wants to share. The Edit Profile page of Control Panel allows for easy customization. One such option is private messaging. If turned on, other users may contact the user via a "Send Message" link on the user's profile. These messages may be viewed and new messages may be sent in the user's Control Panel, and are not accessible by the rest of the community.
A conversation is a way to publically connect with another user, and may be started via the form on the user's profile page. After a conversation is started, the user may respond and others in the community may join the conversation as well. The conversation will be added to the user profile pages of all who participate, facilitating rapid networking and accumulation of friends.
Community discussions also take place in the Forums of the World Rankings, and in the item forums which feed into the World Ranking Forums. These are excellent meeting places for people of similar interests, and archived posts allow for further insight into the category topic. HistoryWorldRankings.com users looking to meet others with similar interests may also access the Browse by User feature or search for users. User searches are based on interest keywords, which may be entered on the Edit Profile page of Control Panel.
